Rural Tourism
Although the visitation to rural properties is an old and common practice in Brazil, only in the last twenty years it was considered an economical activity and characterized as Rural Tourism. This activity started to be treated professionally in the 1980s, when some properties in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, due to economical difficulties, decided to diversify their activities and started to receive tourists.
Rural tourism may be explained, mainly, by two reasons: the need that the rural producer has to increase their income and aggregate value to their products; and the wish of people from big cities to get in contact with nature, with the life style, traditions, customs and the production forms of the countryside's populations.
