African Heritage Tourism
Salvador is the city with the biggest black population out of Africa! More than 80% of the population is afro-descent. The food, religion, culture, music, dance and the art from the African peoples are found here. Aiming at valorizing this legacy even more, the segment ethnical tourism has been developed, which represents so well this vocation of Bahia.
The African Heritage Tourism allows the creation of specific tours like, for example, the one to Liberdade district, which has the biggest Afro-descendent population of the country, around 600 thousand inhabitants. Another attraction of the district is the Afro carnival association Ilê Aiyê, founded in 1974, pioneer in social inclusion work (maintained by the power of the culture and music) and in the valorization of the African roots.
A calendar of events and tours with Afro ethnical motivation will work as a guide to give the visitor, who comes to Salvador, a different daily program, all over the year. Within the ethnical tour a visit to Candomblés terreiros is included with classes on preservation of the religious heritage and respect for traditions.
