Opening of Commercial Ports
Pressed by France and England that were fighting between each other and disputing the support of Portugal, the regent Prince Dom João transferred the headquarters of the Portuguese government to Brazil. On January 22nd 1808, Dom João disembarked in Bahia with the royal family, after a storm that made part of the squadron divert from the original route. During the celebrations to honor the royal family, men of commerce and land owners required the opening of Bahia’s port to ships from other nations. Still in Bahia, Dom João, attending a request from the doctor José Correia Pacanço. agreed with the creation of a Surgery School, which originated the famous Bahia’s Medicine College.
