Exuberant nature and culture
On this tour you will have the opportunity to see the principal attractions of the Baia de Todos os Santos and the Costa do Dendê.
The tour begins in the historic centre of Salvador, which was the capital of the Portuguese Empire until 1763. We will visit the principal attractions of the Pelourinho, as well as the neighbourhood of Liberdade where the headquarters of Bloco Ilê Aiyê are situated, which also runs various social projects in a community where the majority of the population are afro-descendants.
The tour continues to the district of Coqueiros, located in the municipality of Maragogipe, which is an important area in the production of ceramic utensils. Afterwards we will take a speedboat up the River Paraguaçu to the old town of Cachoeira, one of the oldest and most important colonial towns in Brazil, and which began as a small settlement at the end of the 16th century.
The tour ends with a trip to the island of Boipeba, in the municipality of Cairu, one of the principal destinations of the Costa do Dendê, whose highlights are its paradisiacal beaches and sumptuous cuisine.
Summary of the Itinerary
1st Day: Salvador
Arrival in Salvador. You will be received by CULTOUR and taken to the hotel.
2nd Day: Salvador
We leave the hotel to embark on the tour “Climbing the Alley of History” which takes us round the streets of ´Black Rome´, as it was named by the writer Jorge Amado, following the phases of its urban development, from the colonial era up till today, with its unique social and cultural dynamic. Lunch is included and the evening is free.
3rd Day: Salvador
Trip to visit the popular neighbourhood of Liberdade, a neighbourhood where the majority of the inhabitants are afro-descendants. The highlight is the headquarters of the Bloco Ilê Aiyê, whose annex serves as the Senzala do Barro Preto, where percussion and afro dance workshops take place, with the aim of fortifying afro-Brazilian culture.
Afterwards we will visit the Terreiro de Pai Hamilton, where we will have the opportunity to learn a bit more about how the Bahians adopted African religions. Afterwards, we will watch a roda de capoeira, a martial art developed by the slaves and practised in dozens of countries. Finally, you will have the opportunity to have your body cleansed with leaves by the mother of the terreiro, a ritual which drives out negative energies.
Lunch will be served in the house of Valdiria, and includes various typical Bahian dishes served during the religious festivals in homage to the African gods and will be accompanied by samba played on the viola. We return to the hotel; the evening is free.
4th Day: Cachoeira
We will travel by bus to Coqueiros, a small town of fisherman and artists on the banks of the River Paraguaçu, where the women fabricate ceramic utensils.
From there, we will take a speedboat up the River Paraguaçu to the historic city of Cachoeira, one of the oldest and most important colonial cities in Brazil, considered a National Heritage Site owing to its great architectural wealth.
Aside from the main attractions, we will visit the terreiro de candomblé, the headquarters of the Irmandade da Boa Morte, the oldest brotherhood of the descendants of liberated slaves.
Lunch will be the exquisite dish of dried meat in Zé Miúdo.
At the end of the afternoon, we will see the sunset from one of the city´s many vantage points. We will spend the night in the Pousada do Convento, the old Carmelite convent constructed in the 18th century.
The evening is free; a cruise round the bars of the historic centre is highly recommended.
5th Day: Boipeba
We will drive to the port of Valença, a car trip of two hours, and then board a speedboat to the quay of Old Boipeba, a 1 hour boat trip, located on the Costa do Dendê. We will stay in the Pousada Pouso da Maré situated on the seafront of Banheirinho beach, the closest to the village. Its beautiful beaches form part of the ecosystem of the Atlantic Rainforest and its mangroves. Don´t miss the sunset from the beach of Boca da Barra! The evening is free.
6th Day: Boipeba
In the morning, we will head out on a speedboat for a spin round the island, passing the natural rock pools of Moreré and stopping at the pools of Ponta dos Castelhanos (less touristy and more beautiful) to swim in the green and crystalline waters from where we can admire the coral reefs.
Afterwards we will visit Coroa Grande, a sandbank which appears in the middle of the sea at low tide.
Then we will take a trip to the settlement of Cova da Onça, where the fisherman Washington and his family will prepare a drink of cacao, a churrasco of the freshest fish, and a moqueca of pirigui for lunch.
In the evening we will cruise the bars of Old Boipeba.
7th Day – Boipeba
We start the day with an ecological walk (5km) through the jungle and on the beach until we get to Moreré. We will then have the opportunity to try prawn and banana moqueca in a beach shack. We return to the village by tractor.
8th day – Salvador
We will take a 1 hour speed boat to Valença, from where we will take a van (2 hours) to the Island of Itaparica. From there, we will take a ferry to Salvador and go to the hotel. The evening is free.
9th Day – Salvador
The day is free. You will be transported to the airport in time to catch your flight.
