Tourists celebrate the new year with the blessings of Our Lord Bom Jesus dos Navegantes
Local people and tourists that are in Salvador can welcome 2015 under the blessings of Our Lord Bom Jesus dos Navegantes. The traditional devotion, of Portuguese origin and that started in 1750, has its maximum expression on the first day of the year, with the traditional maritime cortege in All Saints’ Bay.
The celebration, whose theme this is year is Our Lord Bom Jesus dos Navegantes attracts the Family for Sanctity, blends the sacred and the profane in one of the most beautiful and important religious and cultural manifestations in Bahia. It’s an expression of faith, when people from Salvador and visitors get together to make wishes for the new year and thank for the blessings received last year.
Program – On the last day of 2014, Wednesday (31/12), after the mass presided by the Archbishop, at 3:30pm, the Galeota Gratidão do Povo (main vessel that carries the image of the saint) the maritime cortege leaves Boa Viagem at 5:00pm towards Salvador’s port.
The highlight of the festivities is the maritime cortege on January 1st that takes the image back to the parish of Boa Viagem.
