Paulo Afonso rises in the touristic scenery as one of the main gateways for the lakes region, where adventure tourism and ecotourism have been growing a lot recently.
There’s a variety of tours that include extreme sports, trails in the caatinga, tours to the canyon of São Francisco River and visits to fish culture poles. Tourists may also watch the process of energy production at the hydroelectric complex of the São Francisco Hydroelectric Company – CHESF. The popular culture, the folklore, the crafts and the typical cuisine are the main attractions.
The Cangaceiros de Paulo Afonso Association is a highlight of the local folklore and makes presentations during the main festivals of the city, staging fights of Lampião and Maria Bonita’s gang against the police. Saint John’s Festival is also a good example of the Northeastern popular culture.
Paulo Afonso has a modern airport and a touristic infrastructure that offers accommodation for a thousand people, bars, restaurants and leisure areas.
